Preheat oven to 350°
Measure and sift together flour and salt; set aside.
Cream together shortening and flour mixture until fluffy. Add sugars; cream well. Beat in eggs; add hot water and baking soda mixture plus vanilla. Mix in nuts, chocolate chips and oatmeal.
Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet, spacing 2" apart.
Bake at 350° for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly golden and feels soft when touched.
Cool for 5 minutes on baking sheet, then transfer to cooling rack to cool completely.
Note Chilling dough for about an hour before baking will keep the cookies from spreading and results in a thicker cookie.
